Brunch and Business: Taking Pride in LGBTQ+ Spaces

Since the 1800s, LGBTQ+ spaces have existed in major cities across the United States, often in the shadows of society in back alleys or industrial neighborhoods. While many LGBTQ+ people feared retribution for expressing their identity, there still was a desire for the community to find a place to connect where many could, even if just for a moment, live their authentic selves. Only recently and in specific American cities do many LGBTQ+ people feel comfortable expressing themselves authentically in public gathering spaces such as restaurants, bars, gyms and other public spaces.

Entrepreneurs and small businesses rushed to fill the void, creating safe spaces for the LGBTQ+ community to connect across the country many times in the form of a “gay bar,” but sometimes it could be someone’s house, as was the case with Casa Susanna. In addition, the congregation of many LGBTQ+ spaces created vibrancy in neighborhoods that had previously lacked investment and activity.

For our June Brunch and Business will celebrate LGBTQ Pride by highlighting several small businesses and entrepreneurs who are creating spaces where the LGBTQ+ community can connect and feel safe living their authentic selves in the National Capital region. Join us for this exciting conversation on LGBTQ+ spaces – highlighting diverse businesses.
